GISP Institutional Members

On April the 10th, 2005, senior representatives from key international environmental organizations met in Cape Town, South Africa for the inaugural meeting of the GISP Voluntary Association. This 2-day event also saw the four founding members of GISP adopting a new Constitution which will combine and strengthen their efforts in the global struggle against invasive species.

 

CAB International

CAB International (CABI) is a global player in the effort to reduce the spread and impact of invasive alien species, specialising in the prevention, management and control of invasive plants, fungi, arthropods and micro-organisms affecting the environment, agriculture and the economy. As a co-founder of the Global Invasive Species Programme, together with IUCN and SCOPE, CABI actively supports global prevention efforts through awareness raising, policy support and SPS activities.

The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy's (TNC) mission is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. One main focus area is on invasive species and here TNC strives toward abating the threat to biodiversity from invasive non-native species.

South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), the largest biodiversity centre in Africa, hosts the GISP Secretariat at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town. Kirstenbosch was proclaimed in June 2004 by UNESCO as part of the Cape Floristic Region World Heritage Site, which includes the Table Mountain National Park. SANBI's mission is to promote the sustainable use, conservation, appreciation and enjoyment of the exceptionally rich biodiversity of South Africa, for the benefit of all people. SANBI's vision is to be the leading centre for biodiversity conservation in Africa and to promote sustainable development and human well-being.
